Operationalising Māori Data Sovereignty Principles: A Review of Implementation Within Government Agencies

In 2023, our Māori data service lead Ernestynne Walsh completed her Master of Māori and Indigenous Leadership. In her research, Ernestynne focused on how government agencies implement and operationalise Māori Data Sovereignty (MDS) within their data practices.

Below we are sharing a research paper Ernestynne completed a part of her studies, alongside a high level summary of this research.

This research reviews the government’s current implementation of MDS and considers what lessons can be learnt from existing MDS implementations within government agencies.

This research provides valuable insights on how government agencies can improve practices around Māori data and foster better outcomes for both Māori and the Crown. Check it out below and feel free to share with anyone you know who is interested in this space.

If you would like to discuss this mahi further, we’d love to hear from you. Reach out to us for a kōrero at hello@nicholsonconsulting.co.nz
